Help The Next
Person
Help The Next Person provides stability, dignity, and opportunity for individuals taking steps toward sobriety and positive change by connecting them with temporary housing and sobriety support.
Our Story

Help The Next Person was born from a deeply personal journey of transformation, purpose, and gratitude.
Founder, Hernan Picalomino, throughout his own sobriety journey, made a commitment to be open and vocal about his experience. He didn't hide his struggles; instead, he shared them. Over time, something incredible began to happen — people started reaching out.
Some were quietly struggling. Some were newly sober. Others just needed someone to talk to who truly understood. Those conversations made it clear that there are countless people searching for connection, hope, and guidance.
Mel Gibson asked for only one thing in return — help the next person.
— The story of Robert Downey Jr. that inspired our mission
After achieving over 5.5 years of sobriety, Hernan began reflecting on the moments and people that changed his life. One of the most powerful inspirations came from the story of actor Robert Downey Jr. During one of the lowest points in Downey Jr.'s life, when he was out of Hollywood and fighting his way back in, Mel Gibson gave him an opportunity that reignited his career.
That simple message became the foundation for this nonprofit.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to support individuals seeking sobriety in whatever way they need most. Whether it's offering encouragement, connecting people with resources, sharing real stories of recovery, or simply being a safe place to talk — we exist to remind people that they are not alone.
Sobriety is not just about quitting something. It's about rebuilding a life, rediscovering purpose, and learning how to show up for others. Every person who finds recovery has the power to create a ripple effect of change.
That's what Help The Next Person stands for — turning recovery into impact, one person at a time.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do... is help the next person.
